Valerian is a perennial herb that typically grows to a height of 0.4 to 0.5 meters. Its name, derived from the Latin word for “well-being,” reflects its long-standing use in herbal medicine. Known for its therapeutic benefits, including treatment for menstrual difficulties, valerian belongs to the Valerianaceae family and is widely distributed globally. In Nepal, it is found thriving at altitudes ranging from 1,800 to 3,600 meters, with our sourcing primarily from the remote highland regions of the Northwestern and Western Himalayas. The essential oil is extracted through steam distillation from the plant’s thick, aromatic roots. Valerian has been traditionally used to treat insomnia, nervous disorders, skin diseases, and even snake bites. Recent studies suggest its effectiveness in addressing sleep issues in children caused by nervousness. The harvesting season for valerian runs from October to November, when the roots are most potent.
