Sandalwood (Santalum album), locally known as “Chandan,” refers to the aromatic wood derived from tree species of the genus Santalum in the family Santalaceae. Thriving in Nepal’s mid-hills at altitudes ranging from 700 to 1,200 meters, sandalwood is a highly sought-after plant due to its distinctive fragrance and numerous therapeutic properties. The tree grows to heights of 4 to 9 meters and is particularly valued for its heartwood, which is the source of its rich aroma and essential oil. Renowned for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-proliferative properties, sandalwood plays a significant role in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and aromatherapy industries. The essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of the heartwood, ensuring the preservation of its unique qualities. We source sandalwood from the midwestern hills, where it is cultivated and harvested sustainably. The harvesting season spans from March to June, providing a consistent and eco-friendly supply of this precious resource.
