Big Black Cardamom (Amomum subulatum) is a spice in the ginger family that is similar to green cardamom but has a smokier flavor. It is a native of the Himalayan mountains in Sikkim, India, and Nepal, and is the world’s oldest and most frequently used spice, known as the “Queen of Spices.” The name Amomum is derived from the Greek words momum, which means “unblemished” or “faultless,” and subula, which means “awl,” referring to the awl-shaped and pointy leaves.
