IMPACT OF DEVASTATING RAINFALL IN WINTERGREEN PRODUCTION OF NEPAL
Wintergreen, or Gaultheria fragrantissima, is a prized aromatic plant that thrives in Nepal's high-altitude regions, ranging from 1,400 to 2,800 meters. Our main production areas of wintergreen are located in the central and eastern regions, where the impact of heavy rainfall was most significant. In 2024, these areas experienced 143 landslides caused by intense rainfall, severely affecting local communities and agricultural activities.
Record-Breaking Rainfall and Its Consequences:
On September 26-28th 2024, Nepal experienced its heaviest rainfall since 1970. The disaster claimed 236 lives, injured 173, and displaced over 8,400 people. Agriculture suffered heavily, with crops destroyed and farmlands flooded, leaving farmers without income. Key infrastructure, including energy, water supply, and transport, was also severely affected.
Impact on Wintergreen Cultivation and Oil Production
The flood disrupted the operation of one of Annapurna Aroma's sites, Lele, flooding the distillation facility and halting production in that area. Rebuilding took months. Wintergreen fields in Lalitpur and Makwanpur saw 40% leaf loss, while other areas such as Dhading, Dolakha, Sindupalchowk, Bhojpur, Ramechhap, Khotang, Bhojpur, Okhaldhunga, Rasuwa and Solukhumbu faced 20% damage. The production area and plants were heavily affected.
Market Implications
Wintergreen oil prices are expected to rise due to reduced supply and higher production costs from rebuilding efforts. Annapurna Aroma remains dedicated to meeting buyers' requirements to the best of our ability. In the event of any production or delivery delays, we are committed to maintaining clear and transparent communication with our valued customers.
Commitment to Our Consumers
Annapurna Aroma takes a proactive approach to overcome challenges, supporting farmers and promoting sustainability while strengthening infrastructure and sourcing to ensure a steady supply of premium wintergreen oil.
