Market Report of JUNIPER Oil (Juniperus cummunis)(2023/024)
Juniper (Juniperus Cummunis) is an evergreen shrub that is found in the mountainous region of Nepal mainly Solukhumbu. Juniper is popular for its berries as well as leaves all around the world. Juniperus communis essential oils come in two varieties:Juniper berry essential oil and Juniper leaf essential oil. This was not always the case in Nepal, a decade ago both Juniper leaf as well as berries used to be distilled at the same time by direct fire. The berries and the leaves used to be collected at the same time by the collectors, without waiting for the berries to ripen up. Moreover, It was difficult to separate the berries due to the cold, so both berries and leaves used to be distilled together. The direct-fire method of distillation of berries and leaves together brought up a number of issues in the oil.The unripened berries cause low oil yield and have a high content of delta cyrine (50%).
After the pressing issues caused by the distillation of both berries and leaves together, we started to use different distillation processes for berry and leaves of Juniper. Now, the berries are collected only after they get ripened and are distilled using a steam-injected distillation process. The content of delta cyrine after separation of Juniper berry and Juniper leaf is less than 1%.
OUR COLLECTORS
As mentioned previously, the collectors used to collect both the leaves and the berries at the same time. After the decision to distill the berries and leaves separately, the collectors started collecting the leaves first and gave some time for the berries to ripen up. This way they would get compensated separately for collecting leaves and berries.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN JUNIPER LEAF AND JUNIPER BERRY ESSENTIAL OIL
Juniperus communis essential oils come in two varieties:Juniper Leaf essential oil and Juniper Berry essential oil. The main difference between the two is that Juniper Leaf essential oil is extracted from the plant’s leaves and contains a higher concentration of delta-3-carene. Whereas Juniper Berry essential oil is extracted from the plant’s fleshy seed cone and contains higher concentrations of Limonene and Myrcene.
OUR CONTRIBUTION TO THE COLLECTORS
As mentioned previously, the collectors used to collect both the leaves and the berries at the same time. After the decision to distill the berries and leaves separately, the collectors started collecting the leaves first and gave some time for the berries to ripen up. This way they would get compensated separately for collecting leaves and berries.
