Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin), a member of the Lamiaceae family, is a fragrant herb that typically grows to a height of 60–90 cm. In Nepal, we source our patchouli from the eastern Terai region, where the warm, humid climate is perfect for its growth. The plant’s leaves are harvested for their essential oil, which is known for its earthy, woody aroma. The harvesting period occurs in March and April when the leaves are at their optimal quality for oil extraction. Patchouli oil is highly valued in aromatherapy and traditional medicine for its grounding and soothing properties, and it is widely used in perfumes, incense, and skincare products.
