Calamus, locally known as “Bojho” in Nepal, is an evergreen shrub belonging to the Araceae family. It typically grows up to 1 meter in height, with long, slender, upright green stems. Found across Nepal, Calamus thrives at altitudes ranging from 200 to 2,500 meters, with sourcing primarily from the mid-hills and western regions of Nepal. The essential oil is extracted through steam distillation from the plant’s thick, fleshy roots and rhizomes, which store vital nutrients. Calamus oil is renowned for its stimulating effects on the nervous system and blood circulation, helping to improve blood flow to affected areas and relieve pain and swelling from conditions like rheumatism, arthritis, and gout. The harvesting season for Calamus spans from March to April, during which its potency is at its peak.
